New for Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Version 5.1

Learn about new features and enhancements in IBM® Tivoli® Storage Productivity Center Version 5.1.

New Features

The following features are new in Tivoli Storage Productivity Center 5.1:

Graphical user interfaces
Tivoli Storage Productivity Center provides two graphical user interfaces for managing the storage infrastructure in an enterprise environment: the stand-alone GUI and the web-based GUI. Each GUI provides different functions for working with monitored resources. To view a comparison of the functions that are available in each GUI, see Available functions and report information in the interfaces.

Viewing reports from the web-based GUI
From the web-based GUI, you can now run the following types of report in Tivoli Common Reporting:

Resources reports
Show the relationships between storage resources in your environment. Resources reports also provide a snapshot of the capacity, available space, and used space on servers, storage virtualizers, storage systems, and related storage resources.
Performance reports
Show performance statistics for the most active storage resources in your environment over a specified period. Performance reports also provide detailed statistics for specific storage resources.
Historical space reports
Show how space is used over a specified period on storage virtualizers, storage systems, and related storage resources.
Storage tiering reports
Show volumes that might require migration from a pool in a storage resource group to a pool in another storage resource group. You also use the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center web-based GUI to view the workload activity reports for managed disk groups and virtual disks.
Creating and designing reports from the web-based GUI
From the web-based GUI, you can create custom reports and design custom reports. You can create and design the reports in report tools in Tivoli Common Reporting.
Custom reports can contain detailed information about the relationships between monitored resources, the properties of monitored resources, and detailed information about the performance of monitored resources. Unlike predefined reports, you can select the information that you want to include in custom reports.
You can create reports with basic formatting, or you can design more complex reports with advanced formatting features. The advanced formatting features include inserting charts that you can customize in reports, and inserting links that open related reports.
Installing Tivoli Storage Productivity Center
You can install Tivoli Storage Productivity Center in one of the following ways:

Installation wizard
The installation wizard provides a graphical user interface for installation.
Command-line interface by using silent mode
In silent mode, you run a command and provide the installation values in a response file. A silent-mode installation is useful if your system is running from a terminal that cannot display graphics.
Installation configurations
When you install Tivoli Storage Productivity Center, your system can be configured in one of the following ways:

Single server
All Tivoli Storage Productivity Center components are installed on one server.
Multiple servers
In the multiple-servers environment, you can have these configurations:

  • DB2® and the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center database repository on a remote server and the rest of the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center components on a local server.
  • DB2 and the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center servers, stand-alone GUI, command-line interface, and Storage Resource agent on one server, and IBM Tivoli Integrated Portal, Tivoli Common Reporting, and web-based GUI on a remote server.
Installation components
When you install Tivoli Storage Productivity Center, the following components are included:

  • Database repository
  • Data server
  • Device server
  • Replication server
  • Stand-alone graphical user interface
  • Web-based graphical user interface
  • Command-line interface
  • Storage Resource agent
  • Tivoli Integrated Portal Version 2.2
  • Tivoli Common Reporting Version 2.1.1
Lightweight Directory Access Protocol
You no longer have to configure Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) as an authentication method during the installation. You configure LDAP as a post-installation task. The Tivoli Storage Productivity Center installation program establishes a default authentication configuration by using the federated repositories feature of the WebSphere® Application Server.
For more information about LDAP and how to add an LDAP repository, see the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center information center and search for Administering Tivoli Integrated Portal.
Tivoli Storage Productivity Center licenses
The following licenses are available in Tivoli Storage Productivity Center 5.1:

IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center
This license contains the following functions:

  • Data management. Data management includes enterprise-wide reporting and monitoring, and automated capacity provisioning for direct-attached storage (DAS), network-attached storage (NAS), and storage area networks (SAN) environments.
  • Disk management. Disk management helps you manage SANs and heterogeneous storage from one console.
  • Fabric management. Fabric management helps you manage the SAN fabric that connects the host systems and applications to the storage devices. This feature includes automatic resource and topology discovery, monitoring, alerts, and zone control.
  • Tape management. Tape management helps you manage your tape libraries that must be SMI-S compliant.
Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for Replication
All of the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for Replication functions, including the functions that were previously in the Two Site and Three Site Business Continuity licenses.

IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Select Edition
This license contains all the functions of the IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center license.
IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Advanced
This license contains all the functions in the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center license plus these additional analytical functions:

  • Configuration Analysis
  • Configuration History
  • SAN Planner
  • Storage Optimizer
Tivoli Storage Productivity Center for data-related functions
  • Scans
  • Policy management
  • Server probes
  • Profiles
  • Data Manager for Databases
  • Data Manager for Chargeback
IBM Scale Out Network Attached Storage
IBM Scale Out Network Attached Storage (IBM SONAS) manages repositories of information in enterprise environments that require large capacities, high levels of performance, and high availability. IBM SONAS uses up 2 petabytes (PB) of storage in a large file system.
Policy-based storage tier reports
Use the Tivoli Storage Productivity Center command-line interface to issue commands that create user-defined storage tiering policies. Storage tiering policies set the conditions that must be met to determine whether a volume requires migration to another pool.
